As our technology continues to leap ahead...the potential for it to be misused and abused by those in positions of power becomes a greater and greater threat. Over the last few years...it has become painfully obvious that this is so...as laws are "adjusted" to allow for just such abuses. Constitutional guarantees and all reasonable rights to privacy are systematically vanishing in the United States...and actually...all over the world. I wanted to write a song about this...because there are still a great number of people who actually believe that the things that they have always done that they considered personal and private things...are still personal and private. Now, all of those things are under total scrutiny by Governments, Intelligence Agencies, and Major Corporations...at all times. There is virtually nothing they don't know...or can't find out very quickly...about any of us...if they decide to devote the resources and that technology to that end.
High resolution cameras and infra-red devices allow those who control those satellites to see right into buildings...or see individuals as they walk on a street...all from secret orbital positions...unseen and unheard. Car license plates can be read from space. Satellites have the ability to "back-trace" the movements and actions of specific people or targets by filming everything, and then when deemed necessary, actually pulling up information from hours or days earlier in order to see where an individual was...or to help locate where a person actually might be now. Cell phones, computers, GPS in automobiles all leave a "digital footprint" that destroys any presumption of personal privacy that we all enjoyed not too long ago, and constitutionally we still have a right to. "National Security" has become a meaningless catch phrase that has opened the door to such assaults on Constitutional freedoms such as "The Patriot Act"...or the suspension of the Fourth Amendment...which has always required "probable cause" before wiretaps and electronic surveillance could be granted by a court-ordered warrant issued by a judge who determines that the burden of evidence for such a warrant has been met.
Reasonable proof of criminal intention used to be the standard for such invasions into a person's private life. Today, no such Constitutional guarantees are needed for personal information to be utilized, collected, bought, or sold in whatever manner governments and corporations decide is acceptable or needed. Sometimes it's neatly wrapped up the ambiguous term "national security"...and sometimes, it's just about how better to understand our spending and buying habits...so that we can be better targeted as consumers by the major corporations. But no matter which way you may choose to look at it...there really ain't no hiding in a digital world. Anyone who wants to know anything at all about every single aspect of our lives can do so rather easily, if they utilize the technology that is available today.
The next time you see a new GPS in your car, or a new cell phone with even greater capabilities...or a new computer design, you should realize it's all designed to make us willing participants in the systematic attack on our Right to Privacy. So what does one do? Make a choice for freedom or convenience? Most people choose convenience. Most people still believe that their governments are benevolent. In 2011, it's very difficult to live in the world and ignore the technology that drives and powers it. I guess they have us right where they want us. I lived for many years without cell phones and computers. It is still possible to do....but not without paying a price. At the very least, we can be very vigilant about what we say and do on anything that leaves a digital footprint. Now, there is a lot of talk about implanting a microchip under the skin of every "citizen" for "identification" purposes." It's time for us all to realize just how frightening of an idea that is...and just how close it is to becoming the new reality. It's hard to believe in benevolent government...when all the evidence leads to a very different conclusion.
VERSE #1
You think you got your freedom?
You think your life’s your own?
You think your thoughts are private?
When you’re on your phone?
When you send an email?
When you spend your next dime?
When you drive down the road?
We know the place and time.
When you cash your paycheck?
Or when you pay your rent?
It might be for a mansion…
It might be for a tent…
You can live in the White House…
You can live in a cave…
You believe what you want...
but ‘til you’re in your grave….
CHORUS
Ain’t no hiding in a digital world…
It’s the “New World Order”… the “American Way”.
Ain’t no hiding in a digital world…
Yes…we know how you think… and we know what you say.
Ain’t no hiding in a digital world…
We got GPS, Night-Vision, DNA…
Ain’t no secrets in a digital world…
We got Back-Trace, Wiretaps, and CIA…
Ain’t no hiding in a digital world…
We know where you work, and we know where you play.
You’re under surveillance in a digital world…
Better watch what you do…better watch what you say.
Your privacy’s gone, in a digital world…
We got credit cards, micro-chips, and NSA…
There ain’t no doubt it’s a digital world…
It’s a Brave New World… and it’s here to stay.
(Spoken): That’s right….we know…EVERYTHING
VERSE #2
We want to know what you hear…
We want to know what you see…
We want to know what you think…
Aren’t you glad that you’re free?
Lock your doors and your windows…
You can’t run…you can’t hide…
Do anything that you want…
We’re still getting inside…
We’d like to know your opinion…
We’d like to change your mind…
We like to keep you guessing…
We like to keep you blind…
We want to choose your options…
We want to steal your dreams…
‘Cause in a digital world…
Nothing’s as it seems.
REPEAT CHORUS
(Spoken, as song fades): That’s right…We know EVERYTHING…
We know what you’re doing tomorrow….and we knew it yesterday…
I know, I know… I KNOW what you’re thinking…you’re thinking…why, oh why didn’t I take the BLUE pill...
